Department of Spanish & Italian

Welcome! ¡Bienvenido! Benvenuto!

In the Department of Spanish and Italian, our programs bring out the deep connections between speaking and writing a language and understanding local and global cultures.  Knowing another language and intercultural awareness are key to understanding events in today’s global contexts and open up diverse and unique career opportunities.  Our classes focus on developing fluency through communicative language applications informed by multimedia and technology resources that bring communities into the classroom.

Our curriculum is supported by the rich and varied scholarship of our faculty from work on Dante and Cervantes to contemporary Mexican cinema, second language acquisition and computational linguistics, just to mention a few.  Students collaborate on faculty research projects, present original work at conferences, and explore areas of interest to them through mentored research and service projects.

Beyond the WFU community, the department sponsors exciting study abroad programs hosted in Spain, Cuba, Chile, Venice and Sorrento, Italy.  From movie nights with fellow students, to internships here and abroad, to community engagement among diverse local populations, we prepare our students to use their language skills at Wake Forest and in the world.  Choosing from a wide variety of courses and interdisciplinary opportunities, you can craft a foreign language education that fits you and your goals perfectly!

See you soon! A presto! Hasta pronto!
